Peter Drucker data scientist identifies the #1 focus of effective firms.

What’s the single most effective investment you can make to build a top-performing company?

The Wall Street Journal and the Drucker Institute recently completed a study of 693 public companies in which they identified the #1 focus shared by the world’s most effective firms

Drucker Institute’s chief data scientist, Lawrence Crosby, studied 37 indicators of corporate effectiveness and grouped them into five areas of focus.

  1. Customer Satisfaction

  2. Employee Engagement and Development

  3. Innovation

  4. Social Responsibility

  5. Financial Strength

Only ONE of these areas stood out from the rest in relation to corporate effectiveness:

Can you guess which one?

You will probably be surprised by their findings!

The right answer is number two: Employee Engagement and Development.

In their WSJ article, the authors note that the “latest research shows that a company’s results are driven, to a major degree, by how well it manages its workforce.”

By tracking the corporate effectiveness of these 693 firms over time, they discovered that “the 50 biggest overall gainers...shot up by an average of 11.2 points in employee engagement and development...None of the other four areas came close.”

Summary: It’s all about your people!

The authors explain that “The best managers keep a close eye on all five dimensions of performance. But if you’re trying to figure out where to focus first, you can’t go wrong by taking good care of your people.”

What can you do to leverage this conclusion?
